What the district water board Veluwe wants

The area managed by the District Water Board Veluwe includes one of the largest continuous areas of countryside in our country: the Veluwe. The area also has a remarkably rich cultural history. Peace and quiet and open space form the strength of the region, but also its vulnerability. In our policy for water we protect and improve these unique qualities. Our vision and activities for the years 2002 to 2006 are set out in our water management plan.

ijsvogel The District Water Board Veluwe is responsible for water management and water defence in the region. We manage dikes and banks, all the surface water, and sewage treatment. It is our opinion that the management of the ground water should also come under our responsibility. The District Water Board Veluwe wants to create a good policy on water in cooperation with other authorities and organisations. The district water board is concerned that people, animals, and plants should get water of the right quality in the right quantities at the right place. When making our policy decisions we consider the planned human activities, the desired animals and plants, and the plans of other authorities. We expressly regard the life of plants and animals in and on the water as an element of water management, and we must take this into account in the same way as the feelings of people about ponds and other watercourses in urban areas. The position of water in town and country planning is of increasing importance. For example, new housing developments in a location where there is a naturally high water level can be very expensive and artificial. Constant pumping does not provide a sustainable solution. We shall be pleased to contribute our knowledge of specific areas in such policy considerations of local authorities and the Province. The vision of the District Water Board Veluwe is based on six basic principles, namely:

  • the water system approach
  • the water chain approach
  • safety
  • no buck-passing
  • ecologically healthy water and (wet)land nature, including in towns
  • water as a factor in town and country planning.
